Order Fulfillment Cycle Time
The elapsed time between a consistently defined order-release or confirmation event and a consistently defined fulfillment endpoint.
Business question
How long does it take to move an eligible order from release or confirmation to the selected fulfillment endpoint?
Formula
Order fulfillment cycle time = average or median elapsed time from the agreed order-release or confirmation event to the agreed fulfillment endpoint for eligible orders.
Calculation notes
Choose whether the endpoint is packed, shipped, delivered, or otherwise completed. State whether calendar time or business time is used and select a consistent order cohort.
Edge-case guidance
Document paused or held orders, cancellations, split shipments, failed delivery attempts, missing timestamps, and why median may be more representative when a small number of outliers strongly affect the average.
Required data
| Input | Type | Status | Available source hints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible order cycle timesElapsed-time observations for eligible orders between the agreed start and endpoint events. | Duration | Required | Ecommerce platform · POS · Manual records · Excel |
Interpretation
Use the measure to understand execution speed and variation across the order workflow. Pair it with accuracy, on-time delivery, stock, and cancellation context.
Caution
Shorter fulfillment time is not automatically better if picking accuracy, product condition, worker safety, or delivery commitments deteriorate.
Implementation recommendation
Choose one start event and one fulfillment endpoint, then segment cycle time by order type, location, held status, and shipment method when those fields are reliable.
Target guidance
Set the first target from comparable historical performance for order fulfillment cycle time, then adjust it for the business model, strategy, capacity, seasonality, data quality, and customer commitments. Review the direction with the accountable owner and consider this trade-off: reducing elapsed time must not sacrifice fulfillment accuracy, inventory controls, or customer commitments.
